How it works

How pre-arranging a funeral works, step by step

Most families finish the planning in one or two conversations. Nothing is signed at the first one unless you want it to be.

  1. Reach Bruce. Call 310-986-2860, email byoung@inglewoodpark.org, or send the short form. He calls you back to answer first questions.
  2. Talk it through. Meet at Inglewood Park Cemetery, by phone, or by video. Bring a family member if you like; many people do.
  3. Make your choices. Service, resting place, casket or urn, and the personal details. You can decide everything or only what you are ready to decide.
  4. Review the costs in writing. You receive the provider's itemized prices before you choose anything. Nothing is quoted on this website.
  5. Decide whether to fund the plan now. If you do, Bruce explains the funding option that applies to your plan, in writing, before you sign.
  6. Share it. Give a copy to the person who will carry it out. Bruce keeps the file, and you can update your written wishes as life changes.

How pre-arranged funerals are funded in California

In California a pre-arranged funeral is usually funded in one of two ways: money placed in a funeral trust, which state law regulates, or a life insurance policy purchased to pay for the funeral. Each has its own rules about payment, cancellation, and what happens if you move. Bruce, who holds a California life insurance license, explains which applies to your plan and gives you the terms in writing.

The state agency that licenses funeral establishments and cemeteries is the California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau (opens in a new tab). Its consumer guides are worth reading before you sign any funeral agreement, with Bruce or anyone else.

Your right to see prices

Under the Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule (opens in a new tab), funeral providers must give you an itemized General Price List when you ask about arrangements in person. You only pay for the goods and services you select.
